NCSA Astronomy Digital Image Libary     Help: Movie Page

About the Movie Page

An image cube is an image with more than 2 axes and can be thought of a stack of two dimensional images. The Preview Page for an image cube usually just shows one plane from the stack. The Movie Page allows you to browse any or all of the images within the current image cube. You can either preview all the planes within the cube as an MPEG movie, or you can select specific planes to preview using a form.

Currently, not all image cubes have a browsable MPEG movie associated with them. Those images that do have browsable movies available will feature a "Movie Page" button in its Preview Page.

Browsing as an MPEG movie

When you browse an image cube as a movie, you will see each plane in the cube in succession. If the field in this section labeled "Movie file status" is marked as "retrievable", then you can click on the "Download MPEG movie" to download the sequence.

To view the movie, you must have an MPEG player installed on your local machine (such as mpeg_play for X-window platforms). Users may find more sophisticated MPEG views that allow for stepping through a movie particularly useful; in lieu of that, X-windows users might like to use the X Play Gizmo control panel as a wrapper around their MPEG players.

Browsing Selected Planes From The Image Cube

With the form provided, you can specify specific planes of the cube to preview and have them tiled within your Web browser. To do so, enter plane numbers into the imput field as a comma seperated list. A range of planes may be specified by the first and last plane numbers seperated by a colon. After entering you request, hit the "Retrieve Preview Images" button, and you will (eventually) see your requested images tiled within your browser window.

Examples

You enter You will see planes numbers
1,4,7,10 1,4,7,10
5:9 5,6,7,8,9,10
1,3,6:9,15 1,3,6,7,8,9,15
NOTE: Requesting a large number of images can sometimes take several minutes to retrieve (on the server side) and download (to the client side).
