NCSA Astronomy Digital Image Libary     Help: Image Preview Page

About the Preview Page

The Preview Page provides a quick look at one plane of a selected image along with some of the basic information about it. The user can view a Preview Page after a successful search of the Library's database; clicking on the matched image entry on the Query Results Page will bring up the Preview Page for that image. The user can also directly access the Preview Page for an image via its codename.

While the exact contents and layout of an Image Preview Page can vary, it usually contains the following in some form:

Image Preview Page Links

Links to more information or operations directly related to the image are marked with the icon, . These can include:
Project Overview
displays the Project Page for this image.

Abstract and Project Description
displays the project abstract (usually in a seperate browser window).

FITS Header Keywords
lists the full FITS header, excluding the FITS history.

FITS Header History
lists the FITS history portion of the FITS header. The FITS history serves as a record of the image processing that went into producing the image.

Movie Page
displays page from which the user can select other planes in the image to view. This can either be seen as an MPEG movie or as seperate images tiled in the browser window. This button will not appear on the Preview Page if the image only contains one plane.
Download the FITS Image
initiates a request to download the image. Downloading images can take several minutes or (even hours) depending on the size of the image and the network load between you and the Library. Additional delay (usually less than 10 minutes) can result if the FITS file must be retrieved from long term storage.

The Image Codename

Every image in the Library has a unique codename that allows it to be accessed directly. For example, the Preview Page for an image having the codename 95.DR.01.02 may be accessed via the URL /document/95.DR.01.02.

An image codename contains four fields. For example, the fields in 95.DR.01.02 translate as:

95 = year of deposit into the Library.
DR = initials of first author of the project to which the image belongs.
01 = first project by the author in that year
02 = second image within its project
Note that projects have unique codenames associated with them as well. For instance, the image 95.DR.01.01 is part of the project 95.DR.01.
