NCSA Astronomy Digital Image Libary Help: Project Page
|
About the Project Page
The Project Page provides links to information about this specific
project as well as to all files within the
project. The user can directly access
the Project Page for a project via its project
codename.
What is a "Project"?
Contributors to the Library (i.e. authors) deposit images as
collections referred to as projects. A project is made up
of one or more images stored in the FITS image format that are part of
a single astronomical study resulting in a scientific publication. A
project also contains an abstract describing the study, a table of
technical data describing the images and the observations used to
produce them, and possibly additional data files (e.g. table data,
diagrams, PostScript figures, etc.).
Contents of the Project Page
While the exact contents and layout of a Project Page can vary, it
usually contains the following in some form:
- Title and authors of the
project.
- Links to article abstracts from the
ADS
Abstract Service that report on the project's science.
- The Project's codename, an identifier for
the project.
- An "Abstract and Project Description" link which will display
the project abstract (usually in a seperate browser window).
- A list of all the images that make up the project. The format
for this list can vary; however, it often contains the following
info for each image:
- The image's name and
codename.
The name is provided by the authors of the project and may be
used in other project documents (such as the abstract) to refer
to the current image. The codename is
used when directly accessing this image.
Example: SgrAWest_Continuum: 95.DR.01.01
Here SgrAWest_Continuum is the image name, and
95.DR.01.01 is the image codename.
- Information about what the image represents; this might
include the Object Name, Type, and Spectral
Line (if applicaple) for the image.
- A link to the image's Preview Page
- A link for displaying the Preview Image (one plane of
the image cube, usually the central plane, possibly
sub-sampled).
- A link for downloading the
full FITS image.
- A list of any additional data files associated with the image
provided by the authors, such as table data, diagrams, or
PostScript figures.
- A list of related external links. These can include links that
query external databases for information related to the authors
or articles associated with the project.
Downloading the FITS images
The full FITS-formatted images may be copied to your local machine by
clicking on the link labeled "Download FITS File".
Downloading images can take several minutes or (even hours) depending
on the size of the image and the network load between you and the
Library. Additional delay (usually less than 10 minutes) can result
if the FITS file must be retrieved from long term storage.
The Project Codename
Every project in the Library has a unique codename that allows it to be
accessed directly. For example, the Project Page for a project having
the codename 95.DR.01 may be accessed via the URL
/document/95.DR.01.
A project codename contains three fields. For example, the fields in
95.DR.01 translate as:
95 = year of deposit into the Library.
DR = initials of first author of the
project to which the
image belongs.
01 = first project by the
author in that year
Every image within the project
has a unique codename associated with them as well. For instance, the
second image within the project 95.DR.01 has the codename
95.DR.01.02.
