| NCSA Astronomy Digital Image Libary User's Guide | |||||
If you wish to download and use images found in the ADIL's collection, we ask that you respect these goals by following the guidelines described below. In general, use of the images should acknowledge the authors of the image and the ADIL.
Research, Educational, and Private Non-commercial Use
The data in the ADIL is provided for free use for scientific research
and educational purposes. Any such use of the data resulting in
publication (electronic or paper) should properly credit the
authors listed with the data in the Library. Bibliographies should
include references to the relevent, previously published literature
associated with the data. The author list and bibliographical
references (in
ADS
notation) can be found on the
Project and
Preview pages associated with
the data. Most professional publications have style guidelines for
crediting previous work; such guidelines should similarly be applied
to the use of data from the ADIL. An example of crediting authors in a
Web document when guidelines don't exist can be found at the top of
this document.
Researchers that download an image for further analysis should take care to familiarize themselves with the observational context of the image (e.g. the instrument used, image processing history, associated measurement errors) to help ensure the integrity of the analysis. This can be done by first consulting the related published articles. When the published literature is insufficient, researchers are encouraged to contact the authors of the image for further consultation. An email address for the primary contact person can be obtained by accessing the Project Abstract from either the image's Project or Preview page.
Library users should also note that some of the images are copyrighted. While none of the copyrights restrict the use of the images for research purposes, users should consult the associated copyright statement before reproducing the material.
Except when restricted by a specific copyright, private non-commercial use of data in the Library is allowed.
Finally, the ADIL would appreciate acknowledgement in any new publications resulting from research that made use of the Library.
Commercial Use
Those who wish to use any data from the Library (including GIF preview
images) for commercial purposes must contact the
authors to secure permission to do so. Commercial users are
expected to give proper acknowledgement in a manner that is agreeable
to the authors. For use of those images marked as copyrighted,
commercial users must consult the associated copyright statement and
contact the relevent parties referred to there.
Commercial users are also asked to acknowledge the ADIL for providing data obtained from the ADIL's server.
Contacting the Authors
Each image in the Library has an associated
Preview Page (accessable
from the Results Page returned from a search query) that describes the
image. Similarly, each project has a
Project Page that describes
the project. All Project and Preview Pages contains a link labeled
"Abstract/Tbl" that gives access to further descriptive information
about the project. Included in that information is an email address
for the contact person for the project (usually the project's first
author). This email address can be used to contact the authors
regarding use of images from their project.
Acknowledging the ADIL
To recognize the role of the ADIL in scientific research and
education, we ask that publications resulting from use of data
obtained from the ADIL include an acknowledgement of our service. We
recommend a statement something like the following:
The [author[s]/publisher] would like to thank the NCSA Astronomy Digital
Image Library (ADIL) for providing images for this article.
When appropriate, you can include the URL for the ADIL's home page:
http://adil.ncsa.uiuc.edu/.
An abbreviated acknowledgement can be associated with a particular image or reference of the form "courtesy of ADIL", as shown in the example above, provided that the ADIL's full name (NCSA Astronomy Digital Image Library) or home page URL is found elsewhere in the article.
Questions
General questions concerning the use of data provided by the ADIL may
be addressed to Dr. Raymond Plante at
adil@ncsa.uiuc.edu.
